Health and Dental Benefits

The Tentative Agreement provides, effective August 15, 2021, that the University shall establish a Student Employee Support Fund in the amount of $200,000, increasing to $225,000 in the second year of the Agreement, and to $250,000 in the third year. Student Employees may apply for reimbursement of out-of-pocket medical, dental, and vision expenses from the Fund. Effective August 15, 2021, the University shall establish a Student Employee Support Fund in the amount of $200,000, increasing to $225,000 in the second year of the Agreement, and to $250,000 in the third year. Student Employees may apply for reimbursement of out-of-pocket medical, dental, and vision expenses from the Fund.  PhD Student Employees, on appointment, may enroll themselves and eligible dependents in the Student Health Insurance Plan at no cost.

Child Care

The Tentative Agreement provides for an increased child care subsidy for PhD Student Employees of $4,000 per year per child under the age of five and not yet attending kindergarten.  PhD Student Employees may apply for the University’s $4,000 child care subsidy, available once per year for each child who is under the age of 5 and not yet attending kindergarten.  In addition, PhD Student Employees may apply for the Adoption Assistance and Foster Parenting program, which provides a one-time reimbursement of up to $5,000 for qualified expenses incurred on or after the parent’s first day of enrollment. The University will consider and try to grant a PhD Student Employee’s scheduling request arising from caretaking concerns if there is a compelling need and the request is compatible with the operational needs of the department.

Leaves of Absence

The Tentative Agreement provides that Student Employees on salaried appointments may request sick leave of up to two weeks for their own serious health condition or that of a parent, spouse, or child, or immediate family member.   In addition, PhD Student Employees will be eligible for Parental Accommodation for a twelve (12) week period, pursuant to the University’s established policies for Doctoral Students. Leaves available to students shall not be impacted by the Agreement. PhD Student Employees will be eligible for Parental Accommodation for a 12-week period, pursuant to the University’s established policies for doctoral students. Student Employees on salaried appointments may request sick leave of up to two weeks for their own serious health condition or that of a parent, spouse, or child, or immediate family member and will be provided with a reasonable number of sick days per semester, which shall not be less than that provided by the New York City Earned Sick and Safe Time Act and the New York State Paid Sick Leave Law. In addition, Student Employees on salaried appointments shall be granted up to three (3) days of bereavement leave and additional bereavement leave in appropriate circumstances.
